Gear Garage

Right then, this is just a really quick heads up today as I'm exceedingly busy. No sadly not doing hobby, but mundane life things that are necessary to function as a civilised human being. As you all know I'm a big fan of anything that makes my life as easy as possible. I'm a HUGE fan of the Devil Teams 'Army Infinity' builder thingy, plus I'm also looking forward to getting my hands on Privateer Presses 'War Room' Application for HoMachine at some stage. I think these sorts of program are brilliant. Well it can't have escaped many of you that I have recently begun yet another new game, the rather spiffing looking Heavy Gear Blitz. You should try it, it's all the rage and all the cool kids are playing it... and me, which probably makes it less cool! So I was delighted to find out that there is a free army builder called 'Gear Garage' available for download off of Dream Pod 9's website. Awesome. Less awesome is the fact that I had to crack out my ancient laptop to run it on because my house is now inexplicably full of Macs! Or really, really old laptops with Unix or Linux on them... but I digress. It's a handy little tool to have, and besides, a little birdy tells me there's a Mac / Flash App version in the works, which is great. Less great is that birds and animals seem to be speaking to me again... hmmm... perhaps I need to up my medication... Peace out!

  1. It might not be as pretty to look at as Infinity Army but it sure gets the job done. And with all the different options and upgrades available for units in the game Gear Garage is a great help!

    1. Yeah I've already been having a fiddle about with it. It's a pretty decent tool if you ask me. Sure it could be prettier, but hey I'm an ugly sod so I can't complain right? :P

  2. I'm a big fan of Easy Army for Flames of War, too.
I'm also not a jazz-handing hipster, so I use a PC, as God intended.
    :P

    1. Mate if God intended for us to use Windows based PC's I'm totally switching sides to the other guy... because every iteration of Windows sucks donkey balls!!!

    2. While God's OS is an important issue, but there are more important theological questions to discuss: Is 28mm God's preferred scale? How does he feel about scale creep? Is 6mm an abomination? Are the games he doesn't play heretical?

    3. I don't think God has a preferred scale or game system, they're all part of Gods plan... apart from Dreadfleet... that's the work of Satan!

  3. Gear garage is pretty nifty, and like how you can print them out with all the stat cards etc. means less faffing about with lots of cards.

  4. Yet another means of making entry to a new game easier... You are really making HGB difficult to resist FLG. D:

    1. Well you'll love tomorrows article then!!! :P

Seriously though why are you resisting any way? You know resistance is futile... just ask SinSynn!

  5. I like using electronic army builders and have been using the Army Builder from Lone Wolf for a number of years; this does have the disadvantage of requiring an annual subscription but I was willing to pay this for the amount of time it saved me and the quality of the lists it produced. When the Infinity army builder came out it was decided that it wasn't worth making files for the Lone Wolf program seeing as there was an alternative available, with more and more companies making their own versions this might see the death of Army Builder for me, especially as now I find it only ever gets used for GW games and given the huge decline in the number of games of 40K I've found myself playing it doesn't seem worth keeping a subscription up.

    1. Electronic / online army builders are a God send. I love them. I also quite like the idea of having separate army builders for different games because they can be bespoke to the game. Plus it fills your task bar up with important looking logo's so you don't feel like you own a iPad just to play wargames... *ahem*... yeah moving on!!!
