Golden Gear 2012

Well it turns out lasts years Golden Gear competition, which I believe was the inaugural Golden Gear, was such a smashing success that Dream Pod 9 have decided to give it another go. So if you fancy yourself as a bit of a dab hand with the old paint brush perhaps you might consider entering the competition. Here are the categories for this years competition:

  • Best Combat Group - Best Heavy Gear Blitz Combat Group, minimum five models. Prize $200CAN worth of Dream Pod 9 store credit / store vouchers.
  • Best Army Commander - Best Heavy Gear Blitz Army Commander. Prize $100CAN worth of Dream Pod 9 store credit / store vouchers.
  • Best Duelist - Best Heavy Gear Arena Miniature. Prize $100CAN worth of Dream Pod 9 store credit / store vouchers.

The winners also get a Gold Plated Golden Gear Trophy. Sweet! The rules are pretty straight forward to be honest with you... firstly, you do not talk about figh... wait, no... that's something completely different! No the rules are pretty straight forward, all Heavy Gear Blitz and Heavy Gear Arena miniatures can be entered into the competition, conversions and decals are allowed, as are custom bases. There is no need to have your miniatures on Hex bases for this competition, but hexagons are cool so why wouldn't you? You can email up to five photographs per entry to GoldenGear@dp9.com, obviously when you do it'd be handy if you included your details, you know like your full name! You can read the official announcement on their website here.

There's some legalese blurb about if submit your photos to them that you grant Dream Pod 9 Inc. the right to publish the submitted photos... and in my case ridicule my cack handed paint jobs! Of course entrants (that's us) may submit entries to multiple categories, however, every submission must be unique, so no doubling up your squad leader as your commander and or your kick ass duelist. That's a big no no and will be frowned upon... and also probably ridiculed! Current Dream Pod 9 employees are excluded from the competition, that means you John Nguyen!!! Any who the entry deadline is December 31st, 2012, at midnight (Eastern Standard Time), Rory if you're reading this, it's different to Central Standard Time. Any way you've been informed now, so go and get painting my pretties. Peace out!

    1. Ah yes... mediocrity. The friend to the majority. Nothing wrong with mediocrity my good man. Plenty of people aspire to it. ;)

Give it a go I say. I mean what's the worst that could happen? You don't win, that's not so bad.

    1. I say why the hell not. I might give it a go or 3 myself. I actually fancy doing trying the Best Duelist category. Maybe attempt the Best Combat Group too.

  3. Hexagons are indeed cool. Can't wait to see the winners. I am warming to the look of this game but the studio painting is a bit dull hopefully some exciting entries?

    1. Now you see I had a discussion with somebody recently who said that while he fund studio paint jobs for the likes of Infinity and Freebooter's Fate inspiring, he also found them totally daunting and that they put him off trying the games totally because he knew he wouldn't be able to paint the miniatures.

Now of course he 'could' paint them, but he'd be annoyed they weren't up to that standard. So I guess it's not as straight forward as give your miniatures the worlds most awesome paint job if you're a company trying to shift miniatures. However, I concur. Some of the HGB paint jobs aren't as good as they could be.

However if you want to look at some of last years winners try this link:

    3. Oh no absolutely. When I look at studio / official paint jobs I want to see "what you could've won" if you catch my drift. I want to go "wow that looks fracking awesome". Like you I want to feel I've got a target or goal to aim for.

    1. Yeah, I know what you mean. I might enter one of my Nucoal squads, or perhaps some of the PRDF stuff I've got on the way.

    1. I've actually been painting a few things recently SinSynn. My NuCoal force for HGB is well on its way and I might even post an article about them. My EotBS fleet is also well on its way to completion now, and I'm eying up the Covenant of Antarctica next!!! Also my Freebooter's Fate Pirates have started to get paint splashed on them too. That's sorta the reason my Blogging hasn't been as frequent as it normally is.

  6. Well, this has got even me wanting to participate. Not because I think I have a chance in winning, but to get something done :p

    1. You should give it a go. I'm definitely going to give the Heavy Gear Arena single mini a stab. I've wanted to do a bold and brash Arena mini for some time now, but as I don't have the game I've been stuck painting my NuCoal stuff in desert camo with flashes of blue. I want to paint bright primary colours again. Even if ultimately I don't enter the competition I'll give it a go and see what peeps think.
