A nice surprise!

One of the really nice things about writing this Blog is that every now and then I get a nice surprise in the post, as opposed to the nasty surprises, which makes a pleasant change as all those nasty surprises I keep getting are mainly utility bills. Seriously, I'm considering powering my house with hamsters! Any way today I had a package from Ax Faction turn up. I have to say I was a little bit surprised it didn't contain anthrax, or botchulinum after my review of the Gilded Saint Dragon Hunter. So they've braved sending me out their latest creation, Raen of Rannoch, Giant Hunter. On first glance she seems more suitably attired than her Gilded Saint counterpart. Here are a few pictures of what is contained in the box:

First up is a picture of the base, which is meant to resemble a giants footprint, and I think it does. I've posted this up here because a number of commentators have questioned what's going on with the base, hopefully this will show that it actually works quite well.

Here is Raen's main body. As you can see she's more modestly dressed than some of her stablemates. However, she's nevertheless still sexy, you just don't need to check to see if Vallejo make Areola pink, or brown depending on ethnicity. There's still a heck of a lot if fine detail on this miniature, mainly around the bodice area, but the fur boots are also nicely detailed. It's genuinely a nice sculpt.

And here's what you get in the box. It's actually a really simple model to pose and construct. You get the scenic footprint base, the main body, a small cape, a helmet for extra base decoration in case that big feck off footprint isn't enough for you and... a sword that looks chuffing HUGE!!! Seriously it's bigger than Raen. Still I guess if your job is lopping off giants limbs then I suppose you need an appropriately sized weapon. I'll be reviewing this shortly once I've got a backlog of other stuff of my to do list. Peace out!

    1. Yeah I've already had a fiddle with it this afternoon and it's quite a nice basic pose and composition, but effective with it.

    2. I'm not sure we needed to know that you had a fiddle this afternoon after receiving her! *lol*

Seriously, that's a lovely sculpt - lots of detail and more modest than that dragon hunter. That sword though - waaaayyy too big, but I guess it is fantasy

    3. You young lady have a filthy mind!!! :P

It is a really nice sculpt, and while I agree the sword is HUGE as it is fantasy who's to say she's not part of a super-human giant hunting sect that get super strength. Or that the blade is made out of a super light rareitanium alloy. I quite like it.

  2. Like it very much.

Though I have doubts that her svelt little self could manage to raise that sword over her head, let alone hack through a giant's limbs.

    1. See my reply to TamsinP above. I tend to agree in terms of reality, but this is fantasy and you could come up with plenty of reasons as to why it might be plausible... so the question I ask myself is this... Does it look cool? Answer? Yep!

    2. Well yeah, in a typical D&D world, that would be a +5 Greatsword of Giant'sheadcuttingoffcoolness and so weigh next to nothing.

But I agree, still looks damned cool.

    3. Indeed... and isn't being cool all that really matters? :P

    1. You know what... I'm really not sure it does you know!!! It'd be nice if it did though, I'd be up for that. It is however nice to get free stuff in so I can show you guys what I think of it.

  4. She looks pretty good! Her bodice is a nice addition ;) The swirls around her breasts look odd though.

    1. I'm actually going to defend the swirls around the boobs thing... I know!!!

Let me explain. I've actually seen some dark ages Celtic female armour, and although the original leather had mostly long since rotted away, there were metal swirls and embellishments that existed that showed the garments shape. Some of the swirls seemed to be 'boob holders' if you will. Swirls, and plaits in metal were actually quite common in Celtic metal work. So it's not as odd or silly as you might think it is.

    2. I fear I've explained myself a bit poorly.

I knew those swirls existed in history. It's just that I don't like the look on the model aesthetically :)

    3. Nope that's fine. There are plenty of people who don't like historical accuracy... just ask the guys at Warlord Games... oh no he didn't!!! Oh yes he did!!! Feel that burn Warlord, that's topical burn that is!!!

I might have to do an article on button counting in the historical wargames area. It's a bizarrely speccy pursuit, with actually quite noble intentions, and full of reverence and respect... look out for a change in Sunday Sermon again!!! Damn now I'd better go write the sodding thing.

    4. Lol, I haven't heard anything, but it looks like Warlord pissed of a portion of the internet recently :p

That poor poor Sermon loses it's place in the spotlight again! But the new one sound interesting ;)

  5. You cannot power your house with Hamsters. Their Union contract strictly forbids it- section 12, paragraph 7, in the bylaws.
The Hamster that lives in my head is a shop steward.
    He's watchin' you, buddy.

    1. God damn unions!!!

Is it a hamster only union, or is it a rodent union? Are Gerbils, Guinea Pigs, mice, rats and other rodents still fair game?

  6. Nice. I've been thinking of getting a couple of this range to pop on standard bases alongside a few of the Hasslefree, Red Box and Banelords ranges for an all female warband (whilst trying to avoid TOO much cheese...)
