Liebster Blog Award

Oh boy! This is one of those horrid little things that pops up on your Facebook page with a picture of a puppy, and says "if you don't like this picture it means you want puppies to get raped and murdered"... well OK so maybe it's not that bad, but you get the point. In a way it's spam, true it's nice spam, because it's somebody saying "hey I like your Blog" and that's always nice to hear, but normally I'd blank this stuff. However, TamsinP over at Wargaming Girl gave me a supposed 'Liebster Award' for my Blog. You can read why here. Now my German isn't great, in fact it's piss poor, but I thought Liester meant sweetheart or darling, does it? Any who the idea is that if somebody gives you an award you're supposed to write an article linking back to them and then give out five awards yourself... you can see why I think it's spam can't you? So why am I not ignoring it then? Well for two reasons:

  1. I actually like TamsinP and her Blog, so I guess this gives me an opportunity to promote it for her here. And...
  2. I actually think promoting other peoples Blog's is a good thing to do, and it's something that I do quite often myself any way.

So here goes, these are my 5 awards:

Porky's Expanse

For those of you who don't know it you should go check it out. In many respects Porky appears to be just as mad as me, and seems to revel in the wider community aspects of the hobby and always seems to have something interesting to say about some topic or other. It's one of the Blogs I frequently read.

Dwartist's Painting Blog

I'm pretty darn sure I've mentioned this Blog before on here. I just really love what Dwartist does over there, and they always seem to be painting something interesting and to a really high standard. Go check it out, there has been plenty of really cool projects shown over there.

Fire Broadside

OK many of you who have read my Blog from the start will know that I appear to have a Swedish gaming twin. He goes by the name Martin and we seem to share shockingly similar opinions on most things. It's always nice to have someone confirm you are right!  But, Martin writes some really interesting articles (when he can be bothered) and I always enjoy reading his perspective... even if it does just reinforce my own.

Max Von Deadlocks Miniature Madness

This is a new one for me. I only recently stumbled across it after bumping into Maxvond himself at the recent Campaign Paradiso launch at Wayland Games... or more precisely I stopped to take a look at his lovely Haqqislam army for Infinity and ask the guy who painted them some questions. He said he had a Blog, so I checked it out and again it's full of really cool painting projects.

Warp Signal

Although he now writes infrequently (due to offspring) I'd have to say that whenever he does write something I'm always happy to read it. Another blogger wh seems to share similar opinions and passions as myself, but who comes at them from a different perspective quite often. Has a good back catalogue of articles you should probably check out.

Firstly I know I've probably pissed somebody off somewhere by not including you in my list. If I have I'm sorry, but hey the rules say five only and these are the five I've picked. Doesn't mean I don't like / read your Blog. Trust me I do a hell of a lot of reading other peoples stuff. For those who I have picked please don't feel under any obligation to continue this meme. I'd totally understand if you didn't. Peace out!

PS. This is it, I'm not doing it again so if you give me a new 'Liebster Award' I'll not go through th edamned process again. TamsinP got in first, so tough!!! :P

  1. I'll check two of those out as I follow three of them already, I've had two of these already today but it's still nice!

    1. Yeah it's always nice to know people appreciate the work you put into writing these articles. I also had a feeling you'd get a few awards yourself any way. :P

  2. Yup, it is a form of spam, but of the pleasant and more helpful variety. I think it's interesting to see which blogs people nominate and their reasons. I discovered after I'd done my list that it started out as nominating blogs with fewer than 200 followers, so it could be seen as a good way of promoting them to a wider audience.

You've made some great picks there. Fire Broadside is actually one of the first blogs I was following (lurking really - I was following it before I set up a blogger account)

I think darling/sweetheart is "liebschen" or "liebling"

Yeh not all spam is bad spam. Just the stuff that comes in tins!!! Yeh I agree its not a bad thing, and it'll be interesting to see the Blogs people nominate. It's a shame I didn't know about the 200 followers or less thing though. I'd have had to have made different choices.

Klaus has cleared up the translation and a very close German friend has emailed me to say it means dearest, which isn't too far away from favourite.

  3. May I help here :-)

"Liebster Blog" translates to "Favourite Blog". And "darling" or "sweetheart" would be "Liebling" or "Schatz" (precious) in German.

    1. You see I knew one of my German speaking buddies would pop up and help out with translation. Thanks!!! :)

  4. I was going to nominate your blog but saw that Tam had already done it...

So I gave your nomination to the Angry Lurker and Don't Throw a 1. So you can take it out on them!

    1. You might want to check your link to Don't throw a 1... Ray will not be happy. You've linked to Angry Lurker, twice!!!

Honestly I'm not so sure I need more people highlighting my Blog. I think these sorts of thing should be used to promote smaller well hidden Blogs that deserve some spot light.

  5. Not into awards, but i do like seeing people promote eachother's blogs, especially in this hobby. The extra views breeds more critique and more critique means more ideas. There can never be too many ideas.

Congrats sir, well deserved and thankyou for the extra blogs to add to my reading list. (Like it wasn't long anough already.)

    1. Yeah that's the reason I did it too. To promote some people's Blogs. Otherwise I'd have not bothered.

  6. "When he can be bothered", bah! ;)

That's very kind of you to award my little corner of the blog! Spam as you say, but spam for a good cause so I will keep the chain letter going. Hehe!

Max von Deadlock was new to me and damn, what a blog! Masterly painting, a good spread of different games and a general sense of quality. Good find! It's a good thing that this post reminded me of Tamsin (hi Tamsin!) as I for some reason wasn't following her blog. I almost missed out on some Full Thrust painting!

Also (and this is really neither here nor there), I'm seriously jelous of you for getting to meet Carlos and the rest of the CB guys at the Paradiso launch!

    1. Hey Martin - stay tuned as I should have some updates on those FSE ships later this week, then it's on to the NSL and finally onto the Japanese :)

    2. @Martin, no problem. Yes it's spam but it's not horrible manky spam straight from the can. And yes Max's Blog is pretty darn cool. I'm glad I seem to have introduced a few people to it.

I thought you might be jealous of me meeting the guys from Corvus Belli. They were thoroughly nice chaps.

    3. @TamsinP I hope I've given you a reader and hits boost as that's what this is all about isn't it?

    4. @TamsinP - That sounds excellent! Especially looking forward to the Japanese as I don't think I've seen those painted anywhere.

@Martin - Definitely jealous! Maybe I should try and pull together some large Infinity event here in Sweden and see if I can lure them here. :)

    5. Martin... you do know talking to yourself is the first sign of madness... right!!! :P

As for arranging an event in Sweden, sounds like a plan Batman. You should hop to it.

  7. I personally love these awards it always shows me some new blogs many of whom I now follow and would not have otherwise. Although it does lead to more writing procrastination but I deem it research RESEARCH DAMMIT.

I didn't realise you had a blog TamsinP off for a good rummage now!

    1. Eeeks! Does that mean you know me from somewhere else? *glances paranoidly around*

    2. @Minitrol, yeah it's research. It's also perspective as reading other peoples thoughts can quite often keep you grounded and stop you shooting off on an extreme tangent and writing some weird hobby version of Mein Kampf... there are a few hobby blogging veterans who do with reading other people's thoughts a bit more. Mentioning no names... lets just say they really, really like competitive 40k list building articles. :P

  8. Blimey - it's a surprise and a real honour to be in with blogs as good as yours and the four of these. Two of them I knew, but all four are clearly very worthy of the attention. In the case of the Expanse, I'm glad to have you looking in, and mad might well be right.

Now comes the hard part of course - I think you have a good point about the nature of awards like this. Back when we had the Stylish Blogger it turned into a swirling tidal wave. I'll run a short PSA then put up my part.

    1. No I've enjoyed your Blog ever since I found it porky. I think you're often extremely left-field with some of your articles, but you also seem to act like a really good search filter for all the good articles elsewhere.

  9. Wow, thanks so much for the link/award :)

    1. Well you deserve it for your Haqqislam stuff alone.

  10. Cheers buddy, I'll have to see if I can nominate five good ones to prolong the warm fuzziness. Shouldn't be too hard, there are a lot of great blogs out there, which I unfortunately don't read as much of as I'd like.

By the way, I also have a Swedish gaming twin, David Stilberg. Weird hey?

    1. I try to read as much as I can of other peoples work. I don't always stop by every blog I follow everyday. But I do check up on them all within a calendar month and see if there are any articles that tickle my fancy. I also always try and engage with people... but it really isn't easy. Not enough time in the day really. Any way, you deserve your nomination and I look forward to seeing the 5 Blogs you pick.

And yes it is also weird you have a Swedish gaming twin!!! :)
