Banner update

And... we're back to normal... sort of. Yeah I've gotten rid of my green and orange Halloween theme for zombie week as that is now over. Good lord do I not want to see another zombie game for a short while. I hope you all enjoyed my zombie related articles and reviews, as I actually put quite a bit of effort into the week and the reviews. Geek can not live on a diet of zombies alone though I have discovered! Some of the more eagle eyed amongst you actually noticed that there was more to my banner change last week than a green tint, and Frontline Zombie appearing in the title instead. A few actually noticed some new games being added to the list, and they are:

I backed the Kickstarter campaign quite heavily. I've read the current beta rules quite extensively, and I'm quietly impressed. Sure I think the missions and scenarios need some work, but the actually play mechanics seem interesting. So with a bit of feedback and tweaking I think the game could end up being a hell of a lot of fun. I'll be covering the game and what I think of it shortly.

Look, when the game was first around there is no question I only dabbled at most. So I've always felt like I missed out on the game, mainly because there wasn't the biggest Confrontation community round by me at the time. So I saw no point really investing heavily. This time round though I will be covering the games re-launch and giving it more of a hearing... and hopefully convincing a few of you to do the same.

I've played the 1.0 Warpath rules a few times, and I have to admit they really didn't impress me at all that much. However, with the launch of Warpath 2.0 Alessio has made some moves towards what I would consider a structurally sound mass wargame. There are still some rather bizarre things in there that I think need changing, and I personally think need a complete re-think... but, I'll be feeding my thoughts back on those shortly. I'll also be reviewing the Warpath starter set Fate of the Forge Star, along with Dark Vengeance shortly. Sure I wish Warpath wasn't just fantasy in space again, but ho hum.

Yeah OK, so the game universe is a bit all over the place and quite frankly bonkers. Some say it lacks cohesion as a product, but then you could level the same criticism at many games currently out there, like Malifaux, and it doesn't seem to have affected that game too adversely! I prefer to think of it as eclectic. The main problem the game has is the variability of the miniature quality. Look past that though and the game is fun and well designed. Not perfect by any stretch of the imagination... but, it does entertain.

Some people seem to think I gave Dust Warfare an absolute panning because I wasn't overly gushing with my praise of the game when I reviewed it. But if you re-read my review I actually said I quite enjoyed it even though I felt it was a flawed product. I have two fairly sizable factions for Dust Tactics (Axis and Allies of course) so not playing closer attention to Fantasy Flight games first fully fledged wargame is out of the question. Especially as the SSU have now been released and a few more people I know are taking an interest.

So those are the new games up on my logo. Sure some of them won't be covered as much as other games, as I'm only one person, and quite frankly I'll play what I want to and write about what interests me... so there. But these games are and will be an accurate representation of what I will be playing. Some of you though noticed something else was actually missing...

Yep the Flames of War logo has been removed from the list. Before people read anything too deeply into that fact, I wish to explain my logic behind it all. When I started my Blog I really, really wanted to give the game more of a go. I'd played the first edition a few times and had plenty of people try to convince me to give the second edition a serious shot. So I brought a hell of a lot of the rule and source books, I read up on my history, and yeah I gave the game a bit of a dabble. I do own some Flames of War product, and I've read the third edition rulebook and think on the whole it looks like a good game. Regular readers of my Blog though will know I get a bit 'hinky' around the subject of historical wargaming. I'm not one of these people who tells others I think it's in bad taste and they shouldn't do it, because I really  honestly don't think that at all. I just personally have a mental block.

So having the Flames of War logo at the top of this Blog, which is about what I love in the hobby and what I'm up to just did not seem right. However, a number of historical gamers have contacted me to try and explain their hobby and to try and convince me to give historical wargaming a go. Plenty of people have asked me to look at Warlord Games products, Saga and of course Flames of War. There have been a few other product review requests, like Deus Vult... I'm not so sure that 'Frontline Gamer' is the right place for me to write articles about these products if I do get round to writing them. Sure, if I review a product that review will end up on this website, but anything more than reviews? No. So instead I've been thinking about perhaps starting a Blog about historical wargames. Obviously I'm not the best, or most qualified person in the world to write about such topics. So would anyone be interested in perhaps helping me out and co-producing a Blog? Let me know. Peace out!

  1. I'd love to volunteer, but I have an amazing ability to cause any project I become part of to fizzle so I'll stick to just commenting unhelpfully instead :p

    1. Not really there's only one boardgame on that list up there, and that's Sedition Wars, which when you see it you'll realise is far more like a wargame on a board. It's also unlikely to saty there post my launch articles and will no doubt find itself replaced by another wargame that will currently remain nameless.

Of course I'll be covering DreadBall. I'll be covering it a fair amount. But it's not going to become the focus of my wargame Blog, no matter how much I like it.

    2. That's a fair point; I hadn't considered the obvious bias towards actual wargames in your banner.

I guess it would be pretty cramped up there if you started including board games!

    3. Mate if I included all the boardgames and card games that I play the banner would be like 6ft long! :P
