Throw is a much loved license like Star Wars into the mix and you'll have a winner.

I started playing wargames and boardgames with my dad aged around 5. But I'd expressed an interest. Personally I always view such age classifications, in terms of rules suitability, as a rough guide.

You'll know better than anyone how smart your boy is, and what sort of attention span he has. How likely is he to sit still for 45 mins to 60 mins before he wants to drink fizzy pop, get a sugar rush and run around the house?

I've met 6 and 7 year old's in my time who are able to grasp games like this before, and as long as there is a a lot of hand holding, and guiding them through things they're more than capable of enjoying games like this. Especially if the Quick start rules are used. I also find 'pew pew' and laser noises help... just don't do Jar Jar Binks sodding impressions.Frontline Gamerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09110901356802705087noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1448296907784874327.post-13284676475441291072012-10-26T08:31:07.442+01:002012-10-26T08:31:07.442+01:00Hi, I stumbled across your site yesterday when loo...Hi, I stumbled across your site yesterday when looking for reviews of the X-Wing minis game. I have to say I enjoyed your review, seemed pretty balanced to me.

Here's a wee question for you all. What's the lower age limit for this game in your opinion? I've been an avid gamer for nigh on 28 years now, and I feel I've seen enough product to know where things fit in. I'm not going to rush to praise something that doesn't deserve praise, nor will I shirk pointing out faults in products that I ultimately like. It's just who I am, I can love something that's flawed and hate something that's perfect, in short I try to be rational as much as I can be, but I know I'm like everyone else when it comes to opinions... they're personal!!! :P

I just hope my reviews contain enough information to allow people to make their own minds up.Frontline Gamerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09110901356802705087noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1448296907784874327.post-30210136473046496762012-10-21T22:11:26.343+01:002012-10-21T22:11:26.343+01:00Not much I can say that hasn't already been sa...Not much I can say that hasn't already been said, but I'm glad you can review games without looking though what would in this case be Star Wars tinted spectacles. Even the best game has flaws and it's good to see that you can be mature enough as a reviewer to address them AND balance them out with enough good points to keep people interested.

What do I think? I like simple games. I think having to explain an overly-complicated rules system to somebody learning the game sucks a lot of the fun out of it for me, especially as in all probability I'll barely know the rules myself. I could probably play this one straight out of the box and thematically I can only think of one person in the universe who doesn't like Star Wars so this one could go down very well. Worth a look, I reckon, although persuading anybody to collect it could be a mission...

Great review once again FG!matt486https://www.blogger.com/profile/14340297995706155680noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1448296907784874327.post-32397700777406989182012-10-20T11:15:47.067+01:002012-10-20T11:15:47.067+01:00Yep you are right. I've toyed with increasing the cost of TIE's by 1.35 times in straight up pitched battles, and that seems to equal things out nicely.Frontline Gamerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09110901356802705087noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1448296907784874327.post-81312891082035272302012-10-20T05:52:42.742+01:002012-10-20T05:52:42.742+01:00Of note, you said the green dice were mirrors of t...Of note, you said the green dice were mirrors of the red, but they are not. Still doesn't change the fundamental mechanics or balance of the game as it's the same for both sides. In fact if anything it hands a slightly better advantage to the Empire as they can spread their risk with more ships and put one in close for the attack boost and leave one long for the defence boost. Seriously it's not a terrible game, and as I said in the review I have had fun with it... but I felt that as hardly anyone else had pointed its flaws out somebody should have the balls to do it.Frontline Gamerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09110901356802705087noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1448296907784874327.post-7360909210450300242012-10-17T17:07:54.383+01:002012-10-17T17:07:54.383+01:00I may have missed it in the slew of comments, but ...I may have missed it in the slew of comments, but you do get to add +1 attack die for being in range 1 when attacking and you get to add +1 defense die for being at range 3 when defending.

It does help the obvious "exactly" balanced system designed by FFG as you mentioned here, "Those stats are important because it means that once somebody has the other in their firing arc they are just as likely to cause damage on each other because of the specialist D8 dice mechanic. When a TIE is shooting at an X-Wing you will both roll two dice, either for defence or attack, with the exact same probability of scoring a hit as your opponent has of scoring an evade. With the roles reversed and the X-Wing attacking it's the exact same, except each side rolls 3 dice each. I've done it with other games myself. However, for FFG themselves it's not a solution to what their primary problem is. They'll want people to come back for more and more upgrade / expansion packs. While the like of my friends and I will search out fan made missions, and even come up with our own, the truth is the majority of people won't and will walk away from the game altogether after exhausting whats in the starter set and maybe initial two waves. I get the feeling that the core starter set is a loss leader for FFG, therefore they need to retain as many of their initial customers as they can. The only way they'll do that is more missions.Frontline Gamerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09110901356802705087noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1448296907784874327.post-16868155323290403012012-10-17T12:56:41.083+01:002012-10-17T12:56:41.083+01:00Well the game remains fun if approached in the rig...Well the game remains fun if approached in the right frame of mind. I remain unconvinced under it's current guise it'll end up anything other than a dust magnet.

While the TIEs and the X-Wings don't match up in terms of stats, in game terms you can give me two TIEs over one X-Wing any day of the week and I'll take them odds. I've been avoiding this one largely out of annoyance over how FFG has handled it - "Hey, let's dump Wings of War and steal most of their mechanics for our shiny new license!" - backed up by an ongoing obsession with custom dice, now happily solved with costly dice packs or the most overpriced smartphone app in existence! It's been hard to get a good read on how good the game actually is, because if Star Wars and FFG don't rate at the top of the fanboi love ladder, they're close - combine the two, and anything resembling objective reviews has been impossible to come by.Buhallinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16511930871965708245noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1448296907784874327.post-15615219083675761872012-10-16T16:11:48.111+01:002012-10-16T16:11:48.111+01:00Yeah everytime we go shopping in my local supermar...Yeah everytime we go shopping in my local supermarket I have to walk passed the Star Wars Lego...
